Man killed in violent DUI accident

A 57-year-old man is dead and a 19-year-old man is behind bars after a suspected DUI accident.

The crash happened at the intersection of Hubbard Street and Ashland Avenue, and, despite the alleged involvement of alcohol, it was just 1:30 in the afternoon. Reports show that the 19-year-old was driving down Hubbard, and witnesses say he was going about 60 miles per hour -- well over the speed limit, it appears, even though police have not confirmed that exact speed.

What police have said is that the man's BAC was 0.24. He is alleged to have been drinking beer before getting behind the wheel. The legal limit is 0.08 for those over 21 -- this man was too young to drink at all -- so his BAC was reportedly three times the limit.

As he went down Hubbard, the 57-year-old man pulled into the intersection legally. The 19-year-old in his Jeep Cherokee blew through the stop sign and slammed into the side of the 2004 Toyota Camry. The impact was violent enough that it shoved the car up over a sidewalk and pushed it on through a nearby fence. The vehicle didn't stop until it reached a parking lot.

The driver died at the scene, though witnesses said that emergency response crews did what they could.

In addition, there were at least two passengers in the Jeep. A 23-year-old was brought to the hospital for treatment, as was a 19-year-old who was thrown from the vehicle.

When another driver's negligent, dangerous action leads to injuries and death, those who are hurt and the families of those who are killed may be able to seek compensation. This can help cover medical bills, lost wages, funeral costs, and much more.
