What types of treatment count as nursing home abuse?

February 20, 2019 Nursing Home Abuse And Neglect

If you have a loved one in a nursing home, it is likely that they will be physically weak, and they may also be emotionally vulnerable. They may not be able to clearly communicate with you about fears and the experiences they are having in the nursing home. However, you may become suspicious of ill treatment by the way that they are behaving.

If you are concerned about the safety and treatment of your loved one, it is important that you observe the situation and write down the specific things that make you feel concerned. By keeping a diary of concerning incidents in this way, it will make it easier to figure out the reality of your loved one’s treatment, and it will be easier to make a claim if it becomes necessary.

Psychological abuse

Unfortunately, it is common for elderly people in nursing homes to suffer psychological abuse. This could be in the form of bullying and teasing, or harassment and intimidation. The victim may not be able to easily communicate what is happening to them, but it is likely that they will display a change in personality and behavior as a result of the abuse. They may become withdrawn or easily startled, be constantly worried or they may mumble to themselves.

Financial abuse

Nursing home staff or “friends” may take advantage of your loved one’s vulnerability by abusing them financially. Your loved one may be aware of this, and may be forced to write checks or make withdrawals. Alternatively, the person may take their assets without their knowledge. If you notice any suspicious activity on your love one’s accounts, its is important that you look further into this possibility.

Physical abuse

If your loved one has unexplained injuries that are not related to any physical illness, you may want to look into the possibility that they are being physically abused. Sadly, this is common in nursing homes, and often victims are too ashamed or frightened to speak up about the abuse they are experiencing. You should never ignore signs that your loved one is being abused. By looking further into the situation, you may be able to uncover the truth and make a claim.
