With the fall season upon us, the nights are starting sooner and lasting longer. Soon, if you aren’t already, you will be driving to or from work and other events in the dark. Nighttime driving takes extra care and attention. Try these tips to keep yourself safe out there.
- Turn your headlights on. An hour before dusk and an hour after sunrise, keep your lights on. It not only makes it easier for you to see the road, it makes your car more visible to others on the road.
- Don’t stare into oncoming lights. On a dark highway, the lights coming at you can seem hypnotic, but staring into them will compromise your night vision and make it more difficult for you to see other things around you.
- Watch for retinas. This time of year, deer and other critters can be crossing the roads at night in the suburbs of Chicago and you only see them when it’s too late. Your headlights and others’ headlights reflect off their eyes and highlight a tiny pair of bright spots. If you learn to keep an eye out for those, you may be able to save yourself from a car accident.
