The Role of Dog Breed in Dog Bite Risk

January 15, 2016 Dog Bites

There are many reasons for a dog to bite. They could feel protective of their owner or family, or feel threatened. Dogs who have been mistreated in the past could be more likely to bite in order to protect themselves, even if you mean no harm. Some say, dog breed plays a big role in dog bites, which in some cases is true, but mostly it comes down to the situation.

Several cities and states have enacted laws to restrict dog breeds in the hope of preventing future attacks. Breeds like Pit Bulls, German Shepherds, Collies, and Rottweilers are said to be more vicious. In most cases, the breed doesn’t matter as much as the degree of training and compassionate care. Dogs bred for fighting, or who are mistreated on a regular basis, are more likely to lash out.

The role of dog breed in dog bite risk is less dependent on the breed, and more reliant on the area and circumstances. If a dog feels threatened or protective, they will act whether it’s a German Shephard or a Schnauzer.
