Be on the lookout for pedestrians this spring season

With spring upon us in the Chicago area, there are more and more people out and about. Whether they are on foot, on bicycles or on skateboards, you need to be as alert as possible when driving. Pedestrians usually have the right of way, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take extra precautions when behind the wheel. Here are some tips to help you look for pedestrians this spring season in Illinois.

The next time you head out on the road, you need to make yourself aware of pedestrians and all the places they could appear. If you are driving on a street that has street parking, be mindful of doors opening and people darting out in between parked cars. Try to drive a little under the posted speed limit to give you more time to stop.

When approaching a stop sign-controlled intersection, be sure to look everywhere for pedestrians. When you come to a stop, be sure to stop your vehicle behind the marked crosswalk so the pedestrians crossing do not have to walk out into the intersection to get around your vehicle.

At an intersection controlled by a traffic light, you need to look for pedestrians crossing where you want to make a right turn. They will have the right of way due to the light, which means you need to stop and let them cross before you make your turn.

It’s a good idea to drive with your headlights on at dawn and at dusk. The added light will help you spot pedestrians and make it easier for them to see your vehicle.

Pedestrian safety is the responsibility of everyone on the roads. This includes pedestrians, drivers, bicyclists and more. Do your part as a driver to avoid accidents this spring in Chicago.
