Can I research the safety of a tour bus company?

A tour bus can hold dozens of passengers, and it's an efficient way to get from points A to B, but what if the tour bus isn't safe? What happens if the tour bus has problems with its brakes, steering or has other safety issues? A poorly maintained tour bus can end in a disastrous accident for the passengers riding inside it -- resulting in catastrophic injuries and even death. So, before you choose a tour bus company for your next group outing, be sure to investigate the safety of the company.

The U.S. Passenger Carrier Safety website offered by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is a great place to start investigating whether your tour bus company is safe. All tour or charter bus companies that drive across state lines need to be registered here. If the bus company isn't registered on the FMCSA website, you might want to take a pass on the company -- even if you're not traveling over state lines.

When searching for the bus company, you can simply enter the name of the company by typing "Greyhound," for example. Next, you'll see a page with different results. You might see an exact match, and you could also see affiliate bus companies showing up in your search. You'll even be able to review information for specific drivers and specific vehicles, in addition to their safety performance.

Doing your due diligence to research the safety of bus companies is a great way to ensure whether you and your group are in good hands. However, accidents can still happen no matter how many precautions you take. If you get hurt because of a poorly maintained bus, the one saving grace is that you'll probably have the right to pursue financial damages in court to pay for your medical care.
