As veteran dies, nursing home staff stand by and laugh

When you move a loved one into a nursing care facility, you do so with the hope that the staff will provide a safe and compassionate environment. Unfortunately, things don't always turn out that way.

Nursing home abuse often occurs because the facility is understaffed or the employees do not have sufficient training. Sometimes it happens when staff members simply lose touch with the human side of care giving. This is what happened to a military veteran living in a nursing facility in 2014.

When the vet first moved into the Atlanta nursing facility, he was reportedly feeling apprehensive about his new living situation. To provide him with some peace of mind, his family installed hidden cameras in his room. The resident was aware of the cameras, but staff members were not.

Disturbing footage and a death

On February 27, 2014, the beloved father, grandfather and retired serviceman passed away. After his death, his family played the recordings from the cameras hidden in his room. Shortly thereafter, they filed a lawsuit against the facility based on what they saw.

In the video, the resident began to have trouble breathing. He pushed the call button for assistance and called for help. Eight minutes after he rang for a nurse, a facility staff member finally arrived. The staff member checked some tubes attached to a medical apparatus, turned off the call button and left the room. An hour later, a member of the nursing home staff came by his room and found the gentleman unconscious.

Instead of immediately starting chest compressions, several staff members stood around the dying man's bed laughing. When the staff finally did start trying to revive him, their attempts were lackluster, and it was too late.

Abuse and neglect must be dealt with

Nursing home abuse is a serious problem in Illinois and across the country. If you have a loved one currently living in a nursing facility and you are concerned that he or she is being mistreated, abused or neglected, it is vital to take steps to remedy the situation as soon as possible.

If your loved one has been a victim, taking legal action may provide you and your family with a sense of justice. It can also help prevent future occurrences.
