Postal worker hit and killed at car wash

A young postal worker was struck and killed at a car wash, while on the job, in what has been described as a freak accident.

Since the accident happened at a business, there was video surveillance footage. It shows the driveway up to the car wash. A sidewalk runs right in front of the garage door. In the video, that door is closed, but a car is waiting on the driveway for it to open.

The postal worker wasn't the only one out that day. A person walking a dog passes by in the video, going down the sidewalk between the car wash and the vehicle. The car simply waits. Then the postal worker comes down the same walk, with her mail cart. As she goes by in the same place, the car lurches forward and hits her. She is pinned between the door -- which is still down -- and the vehicle.

The postal worker was only 28 years old. The man driving the car was 56. He stayed at the scene and talked to police. They said they gave him a citation for failing to yield the right of way to a pedestrian.

The worker is mourned by her family and friends, who described her as positive and vibrant, someone who never stopped smiling. She grew up on Chicago's South Side, went to the Chicago Vocational Career Academy, and then went to both Troy University and the University of Illinois-Chicago. In 2014, she got her degree from Troy.

Losing a family member so suddenly can be emotionally traumatic. It's important for families to know that, while financial compensation can't heal all emotional wounds, it may help cover medical costs, funeral costs and more.
