How big of a problem is nursing home abuse?

Illinois families with elderly relatives may be interested in learning more about nursing home abuse, as described by the National Center on Elder Abuse. The term elder abuse was first defined by guidelines issued by the federal government in 1987, but each state still has its own regulations and statutes governing these types of offenses. Institutional abuse may be described as mistreatment that happens at residential facilities, such as group homes, assisted living facilities and nursing homes.

Playground injury statistics

Illinois readers may be saddened to learn that 147 children under 14 years of age died as a result of playground accidents in the decade between 1990 and 2000. Over 200,000 children in this age bracket are given medical treatment in emergency rooms for playground injuries, costing $1.2 billion in a single year.

Inadequate staffing may lead to nursing home problems

There are approximately 1.6 million residents in nursing homes in Illinois and around the country. Several studies indicate that problems due largely to inadequate staffing plague some of the 17,000 nursing homes in existence. In 1987, a federal law was passed aimed at ensuring that nursing home residents receive adequate nutrition. Despite this, about 33 percent of nursing home residents are malnourished and dehydrated. The combination may cause significant medical issues including tooth decay, anemia, low blood pressure and fractures.

Cornell study shows 1 in 5 nursing home residents abused

Thousands of Illinois residents make the difficult decision to place a relative in the care of a nursing home each year. Families often carefully select a skilled nursing facility that is equipped to provide proper, professional care for their loved one. However, a new research study found that one in five nursing home residents suffers abuse within four weeks of being placed in a facility. The most common source of this abuse is not the nursing home staff but other residents at the home.

Facts regarding elder abuse in Illinois

Elder abuse is a large problem that may go unnoticed by professionals or unreported by victims. In many cases, victims refuse to report the abuse because they fear retaliation or don't want to get a family member in trouble. Recently published statistics regarding elder abuse found that roughly 10 percent of elderly adults were abused in the last 12 months.
