Hit-and-run tragedy in south Chicago suburb

There are few stories sadder than those about a promising young person who is taken away before getting a chance to realize their potential. That tragedy just unfolded recently in a violent motorcycle accident in which a 25-year-old Chicago area man lost his life to a hit-and-run driver who fled the scene.

Hundreds of friends, family members and others gathered recently to remember the 25-year-old who was a business man who owned a South Holland barber shop. The fatal crash was blocks away from his business, media news reports indicated.

The barbershop owner left work early Saturday evening and was minutes later struck on his black-and-gray Suzuki headed east on 170th Street. Law enforcement officials said he was hit by a silver Honda in the Dobson Avenue intersection.

Paramedics and police officers found him lying on the street near his heavily damaged motorcycle. He was pronounced dead of his injuries there.

The driver of the Honda did not stop to render aid or call for help, instead speeding off into the night, leaving the young man to die alone in the street. However, the driver left something behind: the Honda’s damaged front bumper came off in the collision and was found at the scene with an attached Illinois license plate.

The victim was described at the memorial by friends as a generous South Holland native committed to his hometown and helping children’s groups. A friend said that it is difficult to come to grips with the loss.

“We haven’t accepted it yet,” the friend said. “We know that he’s not here with us any longer, but we expect him to walk through the door.”

It is not difficult to imagine the grief the man’s family is feeling.

In many similar situations, a family decides to fight back in the name of their loved one by holding accountable the person responsible for their loss. You can speak with an attorney experienced in wrongful death litigation by contacting Mark L. Karno & Associates, LLC in Chicago or Aurora.
